“Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.”

―  St. Ignatius of Loyola

Do You Feel Called To:

  • Discover God's loving and active presence in your life?
  • Grow in faith, friendship with Jesus, and inner freedom?
  • Deepen your commitment to respond to God's love more fully?
Consider the 19th Annotation, a form of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius!
"Going through the 19th Annotation immersed me in the totality of God's grace in the context of a chaotic and stressful year. During the 19th Annotation I was finishing my Masters, transitioning into a new job, and got engaged. In the midst of all this the 19th offered me structure, an amazing spiritual director, and the opportunity to move beyond stress to see God's presence in every part of my life. It was a deepening of my relationship with God by growing closer every week to Jesus. The 19th Annotation retreat was challenging in the best way, and an indescribable source of light, life, and joy!"

- Elaina Jo Polovick

19th Annotation:  The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

When St. Ignatius of Loyola designed the Spiritual Exercises, he built into them a flexibility so that as many people as possible could do them. While he conceived them as a 30-day retreat, he also recognized that many people, even in the 16th century, could not step out of their lives for 30 days of silence. To respond to this need, he created the "19th annotation," named for an annotation in the beginning of the Spiritual Exercises.  The 19th Annotation is a form of the Spiritual Exercises that is spread out over a much longer period of time so that participants could maintain their commitments to work and family while seeking God in prayer and silence.

Our Program

At the Ignatian Spiritual Life Center, the Spiritual Exercises is spread over a period of approximately 30 weeks (October-June). You will enter into a pattern of meditations, examens, contemplations and reflections. The aim of these spiritual exercises is to free you from any attachment that leads away from God, so that you can more freely seek and follow God's will.

When the Exercises are done fully, you encounter and learn to more fully recognize the living God in creation and your life circumstances; and you learn to discern and follow the voice of God, and to separate it from the other voices that demand your attention. The Exercises help you become a contemplative in action, who experiences and grasps more deeply the Ignatian vision of "finding God in all things."

To make this "retreat in everyday life," you must have a willingness to:
  • Set aside one hour a day for prayer
  • Meet with your director once per week

To make the retreat as meaningful as possible, we strongly encourage you to have had at least one year of spiritual direction.

Payment: We request a suggested sliding scale one-time donation of $250-$500, as well as a weekly stipend fee for your spiritual director; however, no one is turned away for financial reasons. Your generosity helps others make the retreat.

ABOUT US
A ministry of St. Agnes Parish in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, the Ignatian Spiritual Life Center has a three council structure that discerns the programming we need to live an Ignatian life of devotion and service. Our areas of focus are Church Justice, Global Justice and Spiritual Life. Each council offers programming aimed at mobilizing the larger community to love the world the way God intends. Programming includes adult education and faith formation, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, spiritual direction, opportunities for prayer and retreat, and an ongoing commitment to dialogue and service in our Church and world.
