Qualities of an Ignatian Companion

To be a Companion is to be a person of deep desires, generosity, and faith. Companions desire to draw closer to God through prayer and accompanying the poor and marginalized in their community.

Program Details

YEAR ONE: THE IGNATIUS YEAR
In year one, Companions participate in our service and faith formation program which is based upon the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. The Service Component requires participants to have a consistent community service commitment involving direct contact with people who are poor, marginalized, and socially vulnerable. The Spiritual Component requires that participants have a strong desire to deepen their relationship with God through daily prayer and monthly group conversation.  All participants should have a willingness to explore the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius.

First Year Companions commit to:
  • Monthly meetings from September through June consisting of prayer, reflection and faith sharing, led by a trained facilitator
  • Beginning and ending one-day retreats
  • A weekly commitment to accompany the poor, the excluded, the marginalized, and the powerless
  • A program of daily prayer and meditation based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, using a guidebook provided
  • Monthly meeting with a Spiritual Director

YEAR TWO: THE HURTADO YEAR
Second year Companions have the same format as the first year. However, the curiculum is based on texts that challenge the reader to grapple with the implications of discernment in a society where values and ethics have changed. Companions are encouraged to consider a personal sense of vocation as an opportunity to live out one’s deepest desire in the context of a world where many people are excluded and marginalized.

Second year Companions commit to:
  • A 10-month program from September through June
  • Consistent service commitment to the materially poor, the voiceless, and the powerless
  • Daily meditation of 15 – 30 minutes
  • Spiritual reflection through the study of texts and readings that focus on the reality of social justice and our response to the cry of the poor
  • Monthly Faith Sharing
  • Beginning one-day retreat
  • Meet monthly with a Spiritual Director (optional)

YEAR THREE AND BEYOND: THE XAVIER COMPANIONS
In the third year and beyond, Companions make an ongoing commitment to practicing a faith that does justice. They do this through an active prayer life and accompanying the poor and marginalized. Each year, individual cohorts decide on readings that will guide their prayer and discussions as they continue to explore the intersection of service and spirituality.
