At the ISLC launch in January, we invited the community to participate in a new apostolic council structure made up of three Councils: Church Justice, Global Justice, and Spiritual Life. Many of you have signed up to participate to guide and invigorate the life and work of our community. Because of the sudden and sweeping work of the Sanctuary Movement at St. Agnes and ISLC, we have been slower than anticipated in taking the next steps. But rest assured, they are coming! We will be holding our first planning meetings in April and May. These meetings are crucial to getting the structure up and going for the Fall. We hope you will bear with us and keep your enthusiasm alive as we move forward. Stay tuned for specifics and In the meantime, join our Sanctuary work! We can use your fiery spirit and willing hands!

I am a third year Ignatian Companian and when I read about your invitation for us to join one of the three areas of service, Church, World, Spirituality, I felt called to contact you but needed to take some time to discern which area I felt called to volunteer with. After much prayer and discernment, I believe that God may be inviting Team to house and feed on a rotating basis the most vulnerable homeless in Marin County. 1 year and a half ago we contracted with the City of San Rafael to continue this program with their funding for three more years after which the City will have found a permanent site for the REST shelter to be established.
It has been difficult to say the least working with the City and County of San Rafael and Marin in getting them to keep their promise to find a location for a permanent year round shelter. They are catering to those few vocal Marin County residents who do not want an emergency shelter within the boundaries of Marin County despite their promises that they would find a permanent place for our volunteers to bring a hot meal in the evenings to those who are staying in the shelter.
Because of this blatant refusal to keep their promises, the Organizing Committee leaders have asked the various faith traditions to look to their own resources in finding a possible location for a shelter of the kind that is needed in the winter months.
Because I have been to committed to helping find a shelter, I am feeling called to have a conversation about the possibility of finding a Catholic property to establish the shelter we need in Marin as well as the possibility of encouraging the Catholic Church to open its properties to the development and building of affordable housing for those who cannot find any.
I do not advocate the sale of any Church property for this purpose but for the establishment of good management practices that do not exist in our cities and counties in the Bay Area of San Francisco.
Please let me know if my desire to have this kind of conversation through this group is something that the group might consider as I apply to participate in this very wonderful ministry.
Thank you for your consideration.
